[edit]From Classical Latin cólubra, with a forward shift in stress due to the -br- and with */ˈɔ/ developing via dissimilation from the following /β/. Compare the masculine equivalent colŏber < Classical coluber. (Cf. also *iŏvenem, *ŏvum).
