Gothic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

The reconstruction of this term is rather uncertain and based entirely on a gloss of the Gothic letter 𐌻 (l) as laaz in Latin script in the Carolingian-era Codex Vindobonensis 795, folio 20. The reconstructed form and the associated meaning "sea, ocean" given here assume a derivation from Proto-Germanic *laguz.
