German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Late 16th or early 17th century calque of Latin ortographia, from Ancient Greek ὀρθογρᾰφῐ́ᾱ (orthographíā); compare Old High German rehtscrībāri (“person who writes correctly”), itself a calque of Latin orthographus.[1][2] By surface analysis, recht (“proper, correct”) + Schreibung (“spelling”)
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]Rechtschreibung f (genitive Rechtschreibung, plural Rechtschreibungen)
- orthography
- Synonym: (learned) Orthographie
Usage notes
[edit]- Compounds are usually formed from the verbal stem rechtschreib-, especially in Rechtschreibfehler and Rechtschreibreform. In less lexicalised compounds both ways are possible (e.g. Rechtschreibfragen or Rechtschreibungsfragen).
