Etymology

(village in Vinje): Probably from Old Norse rauðr (red) (the area has many iron extraction sites from the Migration Period and the Viking Age). Attested in 1595 by Jens Nilssøn as Rolland.

  1. A municipality of Telemark, Norway, which existed until 1964. Now part of Vinje herad.
  2. a village around the main church in this municipality, located on lake Totak
  3. (informal) a populated area stretching 4 miles (6-7 kilometers) from the church-area down to the south and south-east. The house of the administration of the former municipality was located there.
