First recorded in 1545. From Middle High German Ruodolf, from Old High German *Ruodolf, *Hruodwolf, from Proto-West Germanic *Hrōþiwulf, from Proto-Germanic *Hrōþiwulfaz. Cognate with German Rudolf and English Rudolph.
