From Middle High German quappe, kape, kope, from Old High German quappo, kwappo (burbot, eelpout) (also Old High German quappa, kwappa (tadpole, burbot)), from Proto-West Germanic *kwabbā, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷebʰ- (to sink, submerge, dive). Cognate with Saterland Frisian Kwabbe (burbot, eelpout; tadpole), West Frisian kwabbe, kwab, Dutch kwab (burbot; lobe).
