Punta del Faro
Appearance
Italian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Literally, "lighthouse point."
Proper noun
[edit]- A promontory, the northeasternmost point of Sicily, in the province of Messina
- Synonym: Capo Peloro
Usage notes
[edit]- Noted as one of the three points considered to give Sicily its triangular shape, from which the island gets its ancient name Trinacria.
- The promontory (referred to as Faro) came to stand in as a point of demarcation between the mainland Kingdom of Naples (a term only later invented by historians) and the island Kingdom of Sicily, the latter being claimed by both kingdoms as their official title. The situation lasted until their formal merger and creation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
