[edit]Originally the name of a river, from a compound *Punkalaitio, consisting of Old Norse bunga (“embankment, hill, elevation”) + Proto-Norse [script needed] (*laidō, “route, way”). The latter half has later been folk-etymologically reinterpreted as laidun.[1]
