- In exchange for these alliances, the Vietnamese rulers of the south, the Nguyen clan, obtained administrative control over many of these areas. The sleepy Cambodian port of Prey Nokor (Forest City) at the mouth of the Mekong was taken over in this way in the 1620’s and renamed Saigon (it is now known as Ho Chi Minh City, and houses several million people).
