[edit]Believed to be of Italic (Osco-Umbrian) origin; they may have originally been Illyrian-speaking peoples who fused with the Italics.[1] The name is of uncertain meaning, but compare Oscan [script needed] (praetot, “chieftain, leader”) (see Latin praetor).
