[edit]Named after "Poundbury Farm", which was the name of the land where the new development was built. Poundbury itself derives from Old English *pund (“enclosure”) + byriġ (“stronghold”). Note that this meaning of pound refers to a place meant for the detention of stray or wandering animals; the same source as the pound in the American phrase dog pound.
