[edit]Etymology
[edit]From a variant of Old High German phorta, from Latin porta. The word was borrowed around the time of the end of the consonant shift, so the -t- was generally not affected by it while the p- still was (in those dialects that have a shift p- → ph-). The Ripuarian form with -z- may be due to the fact that the consonant shift reached this region somewhat later, or it may mean that the Latin word had been borrowed there earlier.
