Borrowed from Latin Pompeiī, of Oscan origin, from Oscan 𐌐𐌖𐌌𐌐𐌄 (pumpe, five) + the Latin name-forming suffix eiī, a reference to its five districts. Related to cinque, five, pimp (five), ponzu, punch (beverage), and sengi (currency).
