Etymology

Borrowed from Albanian Pogradec, probably from an Eastern South Slavic language. See Macedonian Подградец (Podgradec), an old name of the city, from под (pod, under, below) + град (grad, city, town) + -ец (-ec), which refers to the ancient Illyrian settlement located on a hill northwest of the city.
