Plockwurst

German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Low German Plockwost. For the first element there are three explanations: (1) from Middle Low German plock, pluck (post, stake), cognate of German Pflock, due to its shape, which is reminiscent of a fence post; (2) from a variant of Block (block); (3) from a Low German word for “lump of fat”, in turn likely from Middle Low German plücken (to pluck), cognate of German pflücken; perhaps comparable to English pluck (entrails).

Noun

[edit]

Plockwurst f (genitive Plockwurst, plural Plockwürste)

  1. a kind of seasoned and smoked sausage made from pork and beef, similar to cervelat or salami
