Named after the British rubber scientist A. R. Payne, who studied the effect.

Payne effect (plural Payne effects)

  1. A particular aspect of the mechanical response of rubber, observed under cyclic loading conditions with small strain amplitudes, and manifested as a dependence of the viscoelastic storage modulus on the amplitude of the applied strain.
