Potentially attested as paveia in 1129, attested with certainty as paveia in 1135. Derived from Middle Dutch Paveien (Pavia). Named after the city in Italy. Compare Demmerik, Hoograven, Laagraven, Kamerik, Kockengen, Kortrijk, Parijsch, Portengen, Snel en Polanen and Spengen.
