[edit]- In England, from Old English ofer + strand, recorded as Othestranda [sic] in 1086 (DB), and Overstrand in 1231.
- In South Africa, basically the same, but probably from Afrikaans or Dutch: compare Dutch over, Afrikaans strand and Dutch strand.
