Overbiel
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as bele in 1188. Compound of over (“upper, upstream”) and a second component of uncertain etymology. Possibilities include a derivation from a term cognate to buil (“swelling”) or a derivation from Proto-Germanic *bili- (“jutting, protruding”). A third etymology interprets biel as "hunting ground".
