Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as haula in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Ousterhaule, derived from a compound of the toponym Ouwer (derived in turn from Old Frisian ower (“bank, strip of land next to a river”)) and potentially a term cognate to Old English hafola (“head”), referring here to an elevated place.
