Etymology

First attested as haula in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Ousterhaule, derived from a compound of the toponym Ouwer (derived in turn from Old Frisian ower (bank, strip of land next to a river)) and potentially a term cognate to Old English hafola (head), referring here to an elevated place.
