Etymology

First attested as lusne in 1311. Univerbation of oud +‎ Leusen. The element Leusen is of unknown origin and is not related to loos (drainage channel). The element oud (old) was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from Nieuwleusen. Compare Dalfsen, Hessum and Welsum.
