[edit]Etymology
[edit]Attested as 't Schilt in 1618. Compound of oud (“old”) and an unclear element. The second element may derive from West Frisian skil (“small seashell”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, be cognate to the hydronym Schelde. The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuweschild. Compare Schouwen.
