Etymology

[edit]

First attested as vosmer in 1410. Derived from oud (old) and a compound of Middle Dutch vorsch (fresh, potable, dammed-in) and meer (pool, watercourse). The element vorsch was quickly reinterpreted as vos (fox, Vulpes vulpes). The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuw-Vossemeer.
