[edit]First attested as oude rewijc in 1295-1297. Compound of Middle Dutch out (“old”) and the toponym Reeuwijk, a compound of Middle Dutch ree (“alignment, boundary line, boundary ditch”) and wyc (“farmstead, village, settlement”) or wic (“inlet, side channel”). Named after a set of polders.
