[edit]First attested as Ossenkoppelerhoek in 1830-1855. Compound of the plural form of os (“ox, castrated bull”), dialectal koppel (“common pasture”) and hoek (“isolated place”). According to an alternative etymology, the first element is ossenkoppel (“amount of land which can be ploughed by a team of oxen in a single day”).
