Etymology

First attested as oesterwijdewart in 1399. Compound of ooster (eastern, east-) and a compound of Old Frisian uuide (willow, Salix sp.) and uurð (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). The element ooster was added to distinguish the settlement from Westerwijtwerd.
