[edit]First attested as oesterwijdewart in 1399. Compound of ooster (“eastern, east-”) and a compound of Old Frisian uuide (“willow, Salix sp.”) and uurð (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”). The element ooster was added to distinguish the settlement from Westerwijtwerd.
