Etymology

First attested as nova ecclesia in 1224. Calque of West Frisian Easternijtsjerk, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian nija (new) and tzercka (church). The element easter (eastern, east-) was added later to distinguish the settlement from Westernijkerk.
