A New Latin borrowing from Ancient Greek ὀνομαστός m (onomastós, “named; having a name”, adjective), from Ancient Greek ὀνομάζω (onomázō, “I name”, verb), from Ancient Greek ὄνομᾰ n (ónoma, “name”, noun); further from Proto-Hellenic *ónomə n (“name”, noun) and ultimately Proto-Indo-European *h₁nómn̥ (“name”, noun).
