Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as palus, qui vocatur hollandensis ("the swamp that is called of Holland") in 1277. Compound of oud (“old”) and broek (“marsh, marshland”). The mention of "hollandensis" in the oldest attestation is either a reference to the swamp having been settled by colonists from Holland or to the conversion of the swampland to arable land in the Hollandic fashion. The element oud was added later in order to distinguish the village from other places bearing similar names.
