[edit]First attested as oxwerderzijl in 1422. Compound of Old Frisian Okke (a personal name) or oxa (“ox, castrated bull”) and either a term cognate to Old Dutch werd (“land next to water, riverine island”) or were (“plot of land, farmstead”).
