Several folk etymologies exist, one of which suggests ògbó (“a type of sword”) + mọ̀ (“to know, to be familiar with”) + ọ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) + ṣọ́ (“to protect”), literally “The ogbo sword knows how to protect”
