Etymology

Cognate terms are found throughout Volta-Niger languages, and cognates also show evidence of the o- and e- prefixes, which are likely obsolete plural markers. See Itsekiri Ogbìn, Igala Ébì, Edo Ógbì, Igbo Ógbì, Igbo Óbì (Nsukka), Idoma Ébì, Fon Gbè, proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ó-gbì.
