English

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Originally a mispronunciation or misspelling of Obama. Somewhat popularized by Donald Trump during a 2018 campaign rally, in which it is thought he had unintentionally mispronounced “Obama” with an “-na” at the end, possibly in confusion with the word amnesty.[1]

Pronunciation

  1. (Internet slang, humorous, US politics) Barack Obama.
    • 2018 October 22, CSPAN, 47:24 from the start, in President Trump Campaign Rally in Houston, Texas[1], spoken by Donald Trump:

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Often used as a humorous interjection.
  • Used in conjunction with the word soda, referencing a clip of a speech by Joe Biden screaming "Minnesota".
  • Used almost purely jocularly and not derogatorily, as opposed to many other variants of Obama when referring to the president.
