Nyyrikki
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain root + -ikki. Older names include Nyrkes (attested as Nyrckes [Agricola 1551]), Nyrkys, Nyrkis. The word was probably adapted into the aforementioned suffix for poetic reasons.
Krohn (1914) considers the name to originate from a variant of Jyrki (Saint George).[1] Harva (1948) rejects this and claims origin from a lost term perhaps originally meaning "squirrel".[2] Haavio (1959) in turn thinks -lk- instead of -rk- - so Nylkys - might have been original. This would in turn originate from nylkeä (“to skin, flay”), a byname given to Saint Bartholomew due to his fate (Nylky-Bartolomeus).[3]
