[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as notselt in 1299-1301. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of an unclear first and second element. The first element has been variously read as Old Dutch noda (“low-lying swampland”), Middle Dutch not (“use, profit”) and Middle Dutch noot (“cattle”). The second element has been interpreted as a term cognate to Old English selet (“willow forest”) or a term derived from Proto-Germanic *sali (“domicile, home”).
