[edit]Irregular (syncopic) compound of the Ancient Greek νῶτον (nôton, “back”) + τρόπις (trópis, “keel”) ≈ “keeled back”, so named on account of its central dorsal ridge (carination). *Nototropis would be the analogical spelling.
