[edit]- (Friesland) First attested as nordameer and nordamer in 1432. Calque of West Frisian Noardermar, derived from a compound of Old Frisian north (“north-, northern”) and mar (“lake”).
- (Noord-Holland) First attested as Noore meer in 1575. Compound of noord (“north-, northern”) and meer (“lake”). The toponym contrasts with Zuidermeer.
