  • (Friesland) First attested as nordameer and nordamer in 1432. Calque of West Frisian Noardermar, derived from a compound of Old Frisian north (north-, northern) and mar (lake).
  • (Noord-Holland) First attested as Noore meer in 1575. Compound of noord (north-, northern) and meer (lake). The toponym contrasts with Zuidermeer.
