Refers to the district of Noakhali, which is a transliteration of নোয়াখালী (nōẇakhali), a compound of নোয়া (nōẇa, a dialectal variant of নয়া (noẏa, “new”)) +‎ খালী (khali, a suffixed form of খাল (khal, “canal”)), literally meaning "new canal".
