Etymology
[edit]First attested as nisterle in the first quarter of the 13th century. Derived from a compound of an unclear first element that has been variously interpreted as a toponym and as Middle Dutch nest (“nest, burrow, resting place”) and lo (“light forest”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to rode (“land cleared of trees”).
