Etymology

First attested as nuwe merden in 1399. Presumably derived from a compound of Old Frisian (new) and Proto-Germanic *mari (lake, pool) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. The element nij was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudemirdum.
