[edit]First attested as oostbrocop and westbrocop in 1320. Derived from a compound of West Frisian nij (“nieuw”), Old Frisian *brôk (“marsh, marshland”) and kope (“purchase”). The element nij was added to distinguish the settlement from Oldeberkoop.
