[edit]- (Drenthe) First attested as Nieuwlande in 1936. Compound of nieuw (“new”) and land (“land”). See also Dutch Low Saxon Neilaande.
- (Zeeland) First attested as nova terra in 1238. Derived from Middle Dutch nieuwland (“newly reclaimed land”). Lost to flooding in 1532.
