  • (Zuid-Holland) First attested as nuwe weteringhe in 1343. Derived from Middle Dutch niuw (new) and wateringe (drainage channel). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oude Wetering.
  • (Overijssel) First attested as Novi Fossati in 1169. Derived from Middle Dutch niuw (new) and wateringe (drainage channel). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oude Wetering.
  • (Utrecht) Attested as NIEUWE-WETERING (DE) in 1846. Derived from nieuw (new) and wetering (drainage channel). Named after a nearby channel.
