[edit]- (Zuid-Holland) First attested as nuwe weteringhe in 1343. Derived from Middle Dutch niuw (“new”) and wateringe (“drainage channel”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oude Wetering.
- (Overijssel) First attested as Novi Fossati in 1169. Derived from Middle Dutch niuw (“new”) and wateringe (“drainage channel”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oude Wetering.
- (Utrecht) Attested as NIEUWE-WETERING (DE) in 1846. Derived from nieuw (“new”) and wetering (“drainage channel”). Named after a nearby channel.
