Etymology

First attested as De Nieuwe Strumpt in 1838-1857. Derived from nieuw (new) and Middle Dutch *strump (tree trunk) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t. The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oude Strumpt.
