[edit]First attested as Sint Joes sant in 1504-1505. Derived from the toponyms Nieuwland (a compound of nieuw (“new”) and land (“land”)) and Sint Joosland (a compound of the name of Saint Judoc and land (“land”)). Originally two independent fiefdoms.
