First attested as Nieuw-Reemst in 1846. Derived from nieuw (“new”) and Reemst, a toponym of unclear etymology. It is potentially derived from riem (“belt, strip”) or Proto-Germanic *hramas- (“garlic”) with collective suffix -t. The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oud-Reemst.
