[edit]First attested as hulsterlo in 1136. Compound of nieuw (“new”) and the toponym Namen. Named after the flooded village of Namen (part of the lands of Saeftinghe), which in turn was named after its location in the Polder van Namen, the polder itself having been constructed by (and named for) John I of Namur (1267-1330).
