First attested as optie aeker, dair nu die zypkerc op staet in 1415. Compound of nieuw (“new”), Middle Dutch loes (“drainage channel”) and -drecht (“ferry, watercourse”). The toponym contrasts with Oud-Loosdrecht. Formerly called de Zijpe.
