Etymology
[edit]Supposedly from an earlier /ˌmʊnsd͡ʒɪˈb(ː)əl.lʊ/, derived from the latinate Blend of mōns (mountain) + Arabic جَبَل ("jabal", mountain), both meaning in fact “mountain”, determining a tautological etymogical. By surface analysis, munti + Arabic جَبَل (jabal), even though a Latin origin of the first element explains better the inner palatalized sound. The Sicilian ending has been perhaps triggered by the apocopic ending of jabal, regularly yielding a syllable and a paroxytone stress after it, as in the nexus〈-ˈV-l-lu〉, then regularly retroflexed.
