[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as mugghenbete around 1313. Compound of the plural form of mug (“mosquito, Culex pipiens”) and an unclear second element. The second element has been interpreted as a Frisianised variant of beek (“brook, stream”) or Middle Dutch bete (“stream used for tanning leather”), but neither of these interpretations match the oldest attestations.
